Pictures as promised

1/2 of 'Slippers' !

Here are the rest of the knit project pictures as promised. You can also see my old truck I sold last year and the last truck I drove before I started working at the Fontana Terminal.

A strange thing has happened since I have been on forced vacation. I am enjoying myself! I’m not making any money sitting around knitting, doing gardening, helping with the laundry and loading the dishwasher, etc. but after being on the road for 10 years, then leaving every morning at 5:00 to go the the Fontana terminal and not getting home till 7:00 pm every night, it is kind of great to just be HOME!!

I have to mention also, my wife really needs me here. I am not sure if I will ever go back on the road like I was before. I have to go back for a while for two reasons. I have to make some money to keep food on the table. Also, I am only 17,000 miles away from 1,000,000 accident free miles, which is an important milestone in anybodies driving logbook. I should be able to achieve this in only about two months of driving.

So, what can I do that will generate some income, let me be home most of the time and still let me be involved in the trucking industry?

SAJ had the answer. She said “Dad, why don’t you start an ‘Ask Tom the Trucker’ column”? What a great idea!

I Googled ‘Truck driving Info’

What I got was several web sites touting different companies and a couple of sites describing truck driving in general and providing a list of about 100 trucking companies interested in drivers. That is all well and good. I’m glad there is a place where someone can go to at least get some information.

I would like to be in there also with a place where someone can ask some questions and get an honest answer.

I would like Werner Enterprises to be a sponsor if they are interested. I have only worked for Werner, so of course I would recommend anyone to Werner. Werner has been a great company to work for. They have always been fair with me, but I would rather the blog or answer column be just an honest place to get honest answers instead of a commercial web site obviously trying to recruit drivers.

Does anyone have ideas for a name for this adventure? ‘Ask Tom the Trucker’ seems ok but maybe there is a better idea lurking out there!

If this could work, I would be able to make use of my experience as a 10 year driver with nearly 1,000,000 accident free miles, a year as a Safety Specialist at our Fontana terminal teaching the Orientation class and working everyday with drivers, along with working everyday with Management in Omaha NE, our headquarters. I think this gives me a unique qualification to help people find answers. And… I could be HOME!!

What do you think?

I am looking for some serious feedback before I start this venture.

Can you hear that? That’s me squealing with delight and jumping up and down! YES, DO IT!!! (Leave it to B. to come up with this obvious, but genius, idea. Like, duh, why didn’t any of us think of that?!) :) Nothing immediately comes to mind re a name for it…but if something does, I’ll be back…

LOVE the idea! really. I think it’s totally do-able, and bet there are lots of way to get the word out there! and I think Ask Tom the Trucker is a great name by itself. Just my 2 cents at the moment :)
