Life is hard and there’s no way around it. No matter what our intentions and plans are it just doesn’t work out the way that we want it to.
The ups and downs in our lives can be pretty dramatic. Sometimes how we react on the way down makes a big difference on how far we may actually fall and how hard it will be to climb back up again.
The Underside of Joy by Sere Prince Halverson made me laugh, cry, and grumble about life not being fair.
Ella and Joe are happy in their marriage. Joe runs the business, Ella runs the house and kids, things aren’t perfect, but it works for them. When Joe suddenly dies Ella is left trying to figure out what to do, where to go, how to run the house and store. Before she can adjust to the loss of her husband the kids mother shows up and announces that she wants custody. Ella knew Paige was around, somewhere, but in the three years she and Joe had been together they hadn’t heard a peep from her, or so she thought.
Ella is suddenly faced with the fact that Joe withheld information from her about Paige and the store. Information that changes everything. As Ella fights for everything she loves and holds dear in her life it all starts to crumble and she doesn’t think she will ever recover.
While things may not turn out the way she wanted it to be she learned how to make lemons into lemonade.
I think that’s true for most of us.
